Inauguration of School of Education and Leadership Management Committee

The Management Committee of School of Education and Leadership at the College of Education has been inaugurated in accordance with the statutory requirement of the University. The inauguration took place at a short ceremony held at the Video Conference Room of the School of Continuing and Distance Education.

In his opening remarks, the Provost of the College, Rev. Prof. Cephas Omenyo showed gratitude to members of the Committee for agreeing to serve the School. Prof. Omenyo added that Education is not so new to the University of Ghana since an Institute of Education was one of the first to be established by the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during the genesis of this University.

He indicated that research is the first focal point of the University and that the Committee should try to help drive this agenda. In line with the agenda, the Provost urged the Acting Dean of the School, Prof. Jonathan Fletcher who also doubles as the Chairman of the Management Committee to start a series on the State of Education in the country. He also mentioned that the School must strongly be hinged on technology which is the second focal point of the College.

The College Secretary, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, highlighted the composition and functions of the Committee after which the Provost inducted the Committee into office.

The Chairman of the Committee, Professor Jonathan Fletcher, in an acceptance speech, enumerated the programmes mounted by the School which include MA Educational Leadership and Management, MA Education, BA Education and BSc. Education. He also touched on admissions into the undergraduate and graduate programme in the School as well as the accreditation process for the Bachelor’s degree programmes at the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. He then thanked the Provost on behalf of the Committee and assured that the Committee would live up to its mandate.

Members of the Committee expressed their gratitude for the confidence reposed in them to serve on the School Management Committee (SMC). Dr. Ato Essuman urged members to be mindful of the competition on the educational market and strive for high standards. Mr. Felix Nyante also expressed the hope that the diverse opinions expressed by members would be harmonised to have a robust SMC.

The Management Committee is chaired by Professor Jonathan Fletcher (Acting Dean, School of Education and Leadership), and has as members: Professor Reginald Tetteh-Ahumah Ocansey (Acting Head, Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies), Dr, Kingsley Nyarko (Acting Head, Department of Teacher Education), Dr. Ato Essuman (Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship Education Research and Training, Methodist University College), Mrs. Nana Abena Kwakyi (Managing Director of Morning Star School Ltd), Mr. Magnus RexDanquah (PR/Marketing and Sports Consultant, RICS Consult), Mr. Felix Nyante (Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana), Mr. Wisdom Kujordji (SRC Representative and Student, Department of Teacher Education), Mrs. Janet Afua Arko Kyei (GRASAG Representative and Student, MA Educational Leadership and Management) and Mrs. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah (School Administrator).

In attendance at the inauguration ceremony were Dr. Clement Adamba, Dr. Yaa Cole, Dr. Ernest Ampadu and Dr. Joseph Cobbinah, all faculty members of the School. The Committee held its maiden meeting following the inauguration.
