The Management Committee of the School of Continuing and Distance Education was inaugurated on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 by the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Cephas Omenyo.
As part of his inaugural speech, the Provost thanked members for accepting to serve on the Management Committee of the School. He noted that the composition of membership was the University’s way of descending from the ivory tower, and urged members to bring on board, their experiences from industry. He said he was expecting to see concrete proposals from the Committee, being tabled at the College Academic Board for consideration and adoption.
He read to members, the vision and values of the University, and urged them to ensure that these values guide the way things are done in the Committee. The College Secretary read out the mandate of the School Management Committee from the University’s Statutes for members to be aware of what was expected from them.
The Provost concluded by saying that the College of Education was the smallest of the four (4) colleges of the University but has the greatest potential to grow and mentioned that the University’s Strategic Plan expects Distance Education students to increase to twenty thousand (20,000) within the next five (5) years. Members were therefore to bring their experiences in academia and business to bear on the work of the committee, the School and the College at large. On that note, Prof. Cephas Omenyo declared the School Management Committee of the School of Continuing and Distance Education duly inaugurated.
In response to the inaugural speech, committee members thanked the Provost for the confidence reposed in them. They were excited that the University had decided to allow the Private/Public Sector and the corporate world to engage with academia. Their excitement stemmed from the fact that there had always been a disconnection between industry and academia.
The Student Representatives on the Committee also expressed their happiness at being nominated to serve on the Committee. They added that they see it as a new way of giving students the opportunity to have their voices heard and pledged their support to whatever it would take to raise the student numbers to twenty thousand (20,000).
The Management Committee which is chaired by Prof. Yaw Oheneba-Sakyi, the Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education has the following personalities as members:
