The College of Education has held a 3-day orientation programme for 24 newly appointed faculty.
The orientation programme was to help the newly appointed faculty settle into their new roles and also to familiarize them with the organizational structure and activities of the College.
The Acting Provost, Professor Michael Tagoe, set the ball rolling by explaining the goals of the University, which are teaching, learning and research. He also spoke on the core values of the
College which include loyalty, commitment, integrity, respect and innovation.
The College Secretary, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, spoke on the governance structure of the University of Ghana and the College of Education. She touched on the collegiate system, the reason behind it and the four Colleges. She also spoke on the vision and mission of the University and the College, as well as their governance structures.
The College Academic Affairs Officer, Mrs. Cynthia Adu, took participants through the work of the Academic Affairs office, marking of scripts, uploading of results, change of staff pin, and other matters.
Mrs. Beatrice Clottey, the College Human Resource Officer spoke on appraisals, applying for leave, disciplinary matters, study leave and other matters related to Human Resource.
The three Deans in the College; Professor Michael Tagoe (School of Continuing and Distance Education), Professor Audrey Gadzekpo (School of Information and Communication Studies) and Professor Jonathan Fletcher (School of Education and Leadership) shared their experiences with the new faculty in an exciting panel discussion.
The Deans spoke among others on their personal academic journeys, time management, and mentorship. They also advised the new faculty members to prioritize tasks, choose wisely, be firm on the decisions they make, set aside time to complete tasks, have to do lists and adopt linkages with other disciplinary areas.
Later, other Senior Members in the College joined a discussion on the new promotion policy, which was led by Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Provost of the College of Humanities. Professor Agyei-Mensah took the gathering through the rationale for and key points in the new policy, as well as evaluation and assessment tools to be used.
New faculty received training in the Sakai Learning Management System on the second and third days of the orientation. Participants received tuition on how to use Sakai: to create and grade assignments; manage online assessments, engage students online, for individual and group study, research activities, collaborative projects and processes. The training was done by a team from the University of Ghana Computing Systems, led by Mr. Francis Awuye-Kpobi, IT Service Delivery officer for the College of Education.
