The College of Education of the University of Ghana organized a two-day workshop to discuss the state of its Learning Centres. The workshop, which took place from 20th-21st October, 2021 in Kumasi provided a common ground for the College Management and Centre Coordinators to interact with the view of drafting strategies to improve their activities.
In his welcome remark, the Acting Provost of the College, Prof. Martin Oteng-Ababio indicated that the workshop provided an opportunity to review the state of the Learning Centres, and collectively, develop strategies to empower them to deliver on their mandate. Drawing inferences from his visits to some of the centres, he opined that it would be prudent for the College to take a position on what it wants to achieve with the various centres. He stressed that each Centre represents the image of the premier University in Ghana and therefore this social capital should serve as a catalyst for positive action. He further indicated that there was a need for each centre to chart a course that will make it relevant to contemporary needs and as a productive centre for knowledge acquisition.
In a brief remark, the Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education, Prof. Olivia Kwapong thanked the Ag. Provost and the Ag. College Secretary for making time to share ideas with the team and chart a new path for the Learning Centres. She charged Centre Coordinators to put in their best to support the vision of the Ag. Provost to transform the Centres. She also challenged the Coordinators not to be consumed by the various bottlenecks militating against their performances but rather be open to new strategies to help improve the lots of the Centres.
On his part, the Head of the University of Ghana Learning Centres, Dr. Isaac Kofi Biney stated that the Centres are the special wings of the University, tasked to deploy up-to-date digital learning devices in teaching, learning and research. He resolved to provide the required leadership to engender efficiency and effectiveness at the various Centres. He encouraged his colleagues to dedicate time and resources towards research to empower and build their individual capacity. He also indicated that his outfit will soon commence monthly seminar series at the main campus and encouraged his colleagues to replicate it at their respective Centres.
As part of the workshop, each Centre Coordinator gave a 10-minute presentation on the major challenges at their respective Centres and suggested strategies that could help overcome and change the fortunes of the Centres.

Dr. Isaac Biney, Head of University of Ghana Learning Centres, Mr. Eric Acheampong, School Administrator of the School of Information and Communication and the Coordinators of the University of Ghana Learning Centres.
