College of Education in Retrospect: Events in The 2nd Semester of the 2021/2022 Academic Year

The second semester of the 2021/2022 academic year was filled with new appointments, sharing of the Provost’s vision, innovation, conference and promotions of faculty members as well as other events in the College of Education.

In the 2021/2022 academic year, a number of officers were appointed to serve in various positions in the College They are as follows:

Substantive Dean, School of Education and Leadership- Prof. Gordon Adika

Head, Sunyani Learning Centre- Dr. Issahaka Fuseini

Vision of the Provost

 

Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College of Education

Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe was the Director of Regional Institute of Population Studies before being appointed as Provost of the College of Education. With a vision to spearhead research, Prof. Codjoe brings on board his expertise in research. His vision for the College of Education is embedded in these three strategic pillars:

  1. to improve and expand Distance Education (DE) & Sandwich programmes as well as introduce innovative programmes in the College of Education.
  2. to facilitate Research Innovation and Development.
  3. to enhance relationships with stakeholders.

The Provost has indicated that research projects serve as key sources of funding for various projects, he is therefore determined to make the College of Education a go-to hub for research.

Prof. Codjoe plans on creating a College of Education (CoE) Research and Surveillance Sites as well as project the image of the College in the world of research, increase research output and expand the base of faculty undertaking research in the College. He also hopes to facilitate processes for the establishment of College Research Centres as well as Inaugurate Research groups.

Meeting with Staff/Faculty/Committees

As part of activities to familiarise himself with the operations of the College, the Provost met with staff and faculty in the Schools and units, Chairpersons and members of the various committees of the College to get up-to- date information on the status of their activities.

These committees and teams included the Implementation Teams for the Kumasi & Takoradi City Campuses, the Marketing Communications & Image Enhancement Team and stakeholder Departments of the Distance Education Programme.

The Provost also attended the 44th Board Meeting of the African Council of Distance Education in Pretoria, South Africa where he dialogued with the Programme Director and witnessed the signing of an MoU between Unisa and the Zimbabwe Open University, an agreement geared towards enhancing pedagogy.

Honours

A few weeks after his appointment, sports athletes from the Department of Distance Education presented trophies won at various games to the Provost. In honour of their achievements, the Provost and management hosted the Team to lunch and presented certificates to them.

The Provost and his team at the College Secretariat also organised a send-off dinner for National Service Persons who served at the Office of the Provost in the 2021/2022 academic year.

Innovation

 

Mr. Kenneth Frimpong

Mr. Kenneth Frimpong, a level 400 Information Studies student developed a bot on Twitter named the Ghana Information Hub which automatically calculates and retweets the amount to be paid on an electronic fund transfer. In the near future, Mr. Frimpong hopes to add more features on this bot to provide up to date information on job opportunity, current affairs, fuel prices, currencies among others.

Banner for the Public lecture to mark the year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Department of Communication Studies

 

In 2022, the Department of Communication Studies held a public lecture to mark its year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations on the theme “Communicating Development Beyond Politics: Can the Tenet of Strategic Communication Help in a Digital Area?’’ The lecture served as a platform for stakeholders to advocate for the use of strategic communication as the foundation of nation building.

74th Annual New Year School and Conference Launch at the School of Continuing and Distance Education

On November 29, 2022 the School of Continuing and Distance Education launched the 74th edition of the Annual New Year School and Conference which was based on the theme “Positioning the African Market for Sustainable Economic Development through AfCFTA.”

The event, which was in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) National Office was launched by Dr. Fareed Kwesi Arthur, the National Coordinator of AfCFTA who stated that University of Ghana had a great responsibility for developing skills ahead of the future opportunities with regards to trade within Africa.

Prof. Samuel Amponsah                                    Dr. Clement Adamba

Prof. Samuel Amponsah who currently heads the Department of Distance Education was appointed on promotion as Associate Professor of Open and Distance Learning in the Department of Adult Education and Human Resource Studies.

Dr. Clement Adamba was also appointed on promotion as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Educational Studies and Leadership.
