Distance Education students present trophies to Provost of the College of Education

The Head of the Department of Distance Education, Dr. Samuel Amponsah led a delegation of student sportsmen and women in his unit to present trophies won at different games to the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe.

During the presentation, Dr. Amponsah briefed the Provost on the sports personalities’ participation in the African University Games held in Kenya and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in England. He indicated that Mr. Abdul Rasheed Saminu a Distance Education student made the University of Ghana, College of Education, and the Department of Distance Education proud when he won a gold medal in the men 100 metres race at the African University Games and placed third (3rd) in the men 200 metres quarter-final race at the Birmingham 2022 Games after recording a personal best time of 21.32s, but narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth by 0.02s. Mr. Saminu was also part of the 4x100 relay team of Ghana that reached the semi-finals at the Games. The Head of Department noted that the student athletes prior to the above games emerged 1st in the male category of the University of Ghana Inter-Hall Games and placed 2nd with 22 medals in the overall outcome of the games. He disclosed that the trophies were won in the following sporting disciplines; discus, javelin, pole vault, high jump, and long-distance race both in the male and female categories.

Commending the Team on their achievements, the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, expressed excitement that the sports personalities were products of the College of Education. He mentioned that he was happy about the victories won by the Team and praised Mr. Saminu for representing the University at the African University and the Birmingham 2022 Games. Consequently, the Provost pledged his support to the Team while encouraging them to win more laurels for the University.

Speaking on behalf of the Team, the Sports Secretary of the Department of Distance Education, Mr. Andrews Tetteh, congratulated Prof. Codjoe on his appointment as the Provost of the College of Education. He expressed appreciation for the warm reception by the Provost and Management of the College. He stated that the Team will continue to work hard to win more trophies and medals in various games to raise high the flag of the University of Ghana.

Other officials who received the trophies included Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, College Secretary of the College of Education, Prof. Olivia Kwapong, Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education(SCDE) and Mrs. Regina Afari Boateng, School Administrator, SCDE.
