Mr. Emmanuel Assasie Delivers Lecture on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension among young adults in Accra

The Department of Teacher Education, School of Education and Leadership has held a seminar as part of the Department’s monthly seminar series. The topic was “Biology, Behaviors, T2DM (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus) and hypertension among Young Adults in Accra, Ghana. The speaker was Mr. Emmanuel Assasie, an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies.

In his presentation, Mr. Assasie noted that Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension are very common non-communicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs) in Ghana and that the country is in the middle of a lifestyle transition, which presents a high prevalence of risk factors that contribute to the onset of NCDs. Mr. Assasie shared with the audience, the results of research he conducted on “the links between lifestyle factors (nutrition, alcohol, smoking, sedentary behaviour and physical activity) with T2DM, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia status, among young adults from Greater Accra region of Ghana”.

The results of the research showed no cases of T2DM and hyperglycaemia, among the subjects; however the results showed a high level of overweight/obesity and central obesity in young adults between the ages of 18 and 35. Mr. Assasie concluded by encouraging young people to combating obesity by actively controlling their diets and exercising regularly.
The seminar was chaired by Dr. Ernest Ampadu, and was well attended by faculty and students.
