A virtual matriculation ceremony has been held for newly admitted students into the College of Education for the 2020/2021 Academic Year. The virtual ceremony was held in line and with the observance of safety protocols on social distancing, as part of efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Acting Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Michael Tagoe, who read an address on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, informed the matriculating students that matriculation marks a special milestone which is relevant for new students to pledge their loyalty to the university’s authority via the administration of the matriculation oath, noting that the oath signifies a bond to be of good behavior, and acceptance of the authority of the Vice-Chancellor and other authorities of the University.

The Acting Provost noted that that the University had increased its admission numbers for the 2020/2021 Academic Year following the graduation of the first batch of Senior High School leavers under the Free SHS programme; with 15,020 undergraduates enrolled, made up of 49.5 percent females and 50.5 percent males.
Prof. Tagoe urged students to pursue excellence and be inspired by the achievements of their predecessors to work hard and attain laurels for themselves and for the University.
The College Secretary, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, also speaking at the ceremony, noted that the Matriculation ceremonies are in accordance with Article 31 of the University of Ghana Act, which stipulates that a student admitted to the University shall take a matriculation oath and sign the matriculation register.

She thanked colleagues, at all levels, for the roles they played in the process of admitting students, working on registration, orientation and matriculation, as well as putting the systems in place for the online delivery method that is being used in the 2020/2021 academic year.
Four students admitted to the College, Rebecca Amoah, Al Jaleel Abdulai Kagbape, Rosina Antwiwaa, and Seth Gyamfi Agyemang, were selected to take the oath on air, representing students in the College. All other students were to take the oath privately, and to sign the matricula online.

While commending University authorities for the technological advancements which made application, registration and selection of accommodation easier and stress free, she called for improvements in the Sakai Learning Management System and the University’s Wi-Fi system.
