College of Education Promotes Wellness and Community Bonding Through Health Walk and Traditional Games During DSRA 2026

 

The College of Education, University of Ghana, recently celebrated the 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) with a Health Walk and Traditional Games event, bringing together faculty, staff and students for a day of exercise, relaxation, cultural expression and community bonding.

The initiative formed part of the College's DSRA activities and was aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles while creating an opportunity for members of the College community to step away from their usual routines and connect in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Speaking in an interview with the Public Affairs Unit, the College Registrar, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, said the programme was part of the College's commitment to promoting the health and wellbeing of its faculty and staff.

 

He explained that beyond encouraging healthy lifestyles, the activity was designed to bring members of the College community together and foster a stronger bond among colleagues. He added that "a healthy workforce is golden to every institution and that the wellbeing of staff contributes significantly to the effectiveness and success of an organisation.”

 

The day's activities began at the car park of the School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE), where participants gathered before setting off on the health walk through the Okponglo junction. The walk ended at the University of Ghana Athletics Oval, where participants engaged in a series of fitness and recreational activities.

Leading participants through an energetic aerobics session was Dr. Vida Korleki Nyawornota, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies, who encouraged participants to remain active and embrace healthy habits.

This was followed by a refreshing yoga session facilitated by Rev. Sr. Prof. Florence Awoniyi of the Department of Teacher Education, giving participants the opportunity to relax, stretch and rejuvenate.

 

The excitement continued with a series of traditional games that brought out the competitive spirit and encouraged interaction among participants. Faculty, staff and students enthusiastically participated in games including ludo, oware, ampe, dame, contest ball, lime and spoon race, sack race and spa cards, creating moments of fun, laughter and shared memories.

Closing the event, Mr. Oduro Nkansah commended the DSRA Planning Committee for their commitment and effort in putting the programme together. He noted that the success of the activity demonstrated the value of collaborative efforts in creating initiatives that promote staff wellbeing and strengthen the College community.

 

The Health Walk and Traditional Games formed part of the College's wider DSRA 2026 celebrations, which highlight innovation, indigenous knowledge and partnerships for inclusive and sustainable development while promoting a healthy, connected and vibrant College community.
