The University of Ghana has appointed the distinguished development economist and academic leader, Professor Peter Quartey, as the fifth Provost of its College of Education, with effect from 1st August, 2026. He succeeds Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, ushering in a new era of leadership for one of the University's four colleges.

Professor Quartey's appointment underscores the University's commitment to academic excellence, research innovation and transformative leadership. With an accomplished career spanning academia, policy research and public service, he is well positioned to provide strategic direction and further enhance the College's contribution to educational development in Ghana and beyond.

He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Retail Finance Distribution (ReFinD) Research Initiative, a Gates Foundation-funded flagship programme of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). The initiative supports innovative public policy and commercial interventions aimed at expanding financial inclusion through more efficient agent network operations.

Beyond his academic leadership, Professor Quartey serves on the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) Ghana and as Vice Board Chairman of The Hunger Project Ghana. He is also a member of the African Economic Research Consortium and the Global Development Network, as well as a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

An internationally recognised scholar, Professor Quartey's research focuses on development finance, the financial and monetary sectors, private sector development, migration, remittances and poverty analysis. He has published extensively in these fields, attracting more than 6,500 citations on Google Scholar. His expertise has also been sought by leading international organisations, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID). He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Development Economics from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

Professor Quartey succeeds Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, whose tenure as Provost was marked by dedicated service, strategic leadership and institutional transformation. As he assumes office, Professor Quartey brings a wealth of experience in academia, policy research and institutional leadership, and is expected to build on the gains made by his predecessor while providing strategic direction to enhance the College's profile, strengthen its academic and research excellence, and expand its impact and recognition within Ghana and the international higher education community.
