The University of Ghana College of Education recently hosted its maiden Staff and Students Awards and Dinner Dance. This much anticipated event celebrated the outstanding achievements of staff and students, acknowledging their contributions to the College. Over 45 awards were presented, including plaques, citations, laptops, flat screen TVs, fridges and cash prizes to honour students and staff for their commendable efforts.
Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College of Education
In his address, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College of Education, emphasised the importance of the occasion, stating, "We have numerous reasons to celebrate our achievements over the years." He highlighted the College's accomplishments, including the establishment of two city campuses, completing a three-story building for the Tema Learning Centre, hosting two major research grants for the first time, forming eight departmental research teams at the College and one for affiliated Colleges of Education. He also pointed out the institutionalisation of a biennial conference, organisation of the maiden College of Education Pen Ceremony, introduction of market-driven Continuing Professional Development Programmes, sponsorship for staff to undertake various training programmes, among others.

Prof. Codjoe expressed gratitude to the College Advisory Board, sponsors, and all who have contributed to the College’s success. “I must admit that I have been overwhelmed by the show of support from members of the College Advisory Board, the College community, and friends of the College. You have been very generous and have demonstrated that you are committed to seeing the College of Education flourish and make impactful contributions to education in Ghana.” he remarked.
Mr. Amar Deep Singh Hari
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Amar Deep Singh Hari, Executive Director and Group CEO of IPMC, emphasised the important role of teachers in shaping future generations. He called for the highest standards of character among educators and acknowledged the economic challenges they face. Mr. Hari stressed the need for creativity in teaching methods, especially with the advancement of the internet and artificial intelligence. He added, "The need for today's teacher, especially in the world of AI, is to create open minds that are tolerant of the diversity in which the human race lives, to ensure that they all live in peace". He concluded by congratulating all the award winners.
Nana Kwadwo Dwemoh Benneh
In a brief remark, Nana Kwadwo Dwemoh Benneh, Chairman for the ceremony and Chairman of the College Advisory Board, commended the planning committee for their efforts in organising the event. He also acknowledged the sponsors for their continued support and expressed hope for their continued sponsorship in the future. Mr. Benneh congratulated the awardees and encouraged them to continue working hard. He announced that the awards ceremony has been institutionalised as an annual event, intended to inspire both staff and students to strive for excellence.
Mr. Michael Leslie Bartlett-Vanderpuye
Mr. Michael Leslie Bartlett-Vanderpuye, Chairman of the planning committee and a member of the College Advisory Board, in his remark, stressed the importance of giving back to society. He expressed deep gratitude to Nana Kwadwo Dwemoh Benneh, his team Advisory Board members, sponsors, and the planning committee members. Mr. Bartlett-Vanderpuye also highlighted the fairness in the selection of the award winners and encouraged others to strive for recognition in the coming year.

The ceremony included awards in various categories such as Best Student, Best Worker, Best Organiser, Promising Early Career Researcher, Distinguished Researcher, Distinguished Teacher, Best Principal of Affiliated Colleges, Best Coordinator, Meritorious, and the Provost’s Special Awards. Sponsors were presented with plaques in recognition of their support and members of the planning committee received certificates of appreciation. Mrs. Rodarling Aku Neequaye, School Administrator of the School of Education and Leadership, gave the vote of thanks.

The presentation of the awards was facilitated by the College Registrar, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah. Ms Pascaline Songsore, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Public Affairs Directorate, moderated the Ceremony. The School of Performing Arts Dance Band provided lively musical entertainment, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
