College Of Education Holds Virtual Matriculation Ceremony To Welcome Fresh Students

The College of Education recently held a virtual matriculation ceremony to welcome fresh students who have enrolled in various academic programmes for the 2023/2024 academic year. This ceremony served as the official induction of the students into the University of Ghana.

The College Secretary, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, acting on behalf of the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, highlighted the importance of the matriculation ceremony, in accordance with Article 31 of the University of Ghana Act 2010, Act 806. Acknowledging the diverse academic landscape, the Registrar revealed plans by the University to host separate ceremonies for students enrolled in Distance Education and Special Programmes.

 

Earlier, Dr. Mrs. Elizier Ameyaw Buronyah, Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, extended a warm welcome to all matriculants to the 2024 College-based matriculation ceremony. She emphasised the University’s commitment to effectively communicate with stakeholders, particularly students, via a variety of media channels. Matriculants were also acquainted with the University of Ghana's presence on various social media platforms and encouraged to follow, like, and subscribe to stay updated on university events and news.

The Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, congratulated all matriculants, and admonished them to uphold the University’s values of integrity, commitment, respect and loyalty.

 

In her address, the Vice-Chancellor provided updates on several transformative initiatives aimed at enriching students’ experience that had been undertaken by the University. Refurbished lecture halls, fitted with state-of-the-art technologies through the Vice-Chancellor’s digitalisation agenda, aiming to create a world-class educational environment. Additionally, 384 laptops had been distributed to deserving students in need. Sod-cutting ceremonies had also been performed for the construction of hotspot comfort zones, which will provide serene spaces for relaxation for students in between lectures.

 

In a nod to the University's 75th anniversary, the Vice-Chancellor unveiled plans for the construction of a legacy project. She envisioned this Students’ Experience Centre as a holistic center offering a host of resources and services tailored toward student needs.

 

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo provided brief updates on the University, in areas including, admissions, international student enrollment, housing, financial aid, academic excellence, and discipline, health and wellness, counseling and support services, and extra curriculum activities. She stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between academic pursuits and extracurricular activities for a fulfilling university experience, adding that excellence in their academic pursuits can only be attained if they have the right balance of studies, recreational, and religious activities.

 

The matriculation oath was solemnly administered by the College Secretary to the Matriculants. Ms. Muniratu Abagre Issifu delivered the expectations address and also signed the Matricula in person, on behalf of her colleagues.

 

Delivering her speech on expectations of university life, Ms. Muniratu Abagre commended the University for providing students with exceptional academic facilities, such as the Balme Library, modernised lecture halls, sporting facilities, and robust Wi-Fi, among others.

 

Matriculants were expected to sign the Matricula online, confirming their membership of the University.
