Lecerp Trains Teachers in Asuogyaman District to Boost ICT Integration in Classrooms

 

The Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP) has conducted a capacity-building workshop to equip teachers in the Asuogyaman District with the skills to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) more effectively into classroom teaching and learning.

The two-day training, held from 1st to 2nd September 2025, brought together teachers from Boso Senior High Technical School and Apeguso Senior High School. It forms part of the Leveraging Internet Access for Teacher Professional Development (LIATPD) Project, an initiative launched in October 2024 at the University of Ghana in partnership with the Internet Society Foundation (ISOC). The project aims to enhance digital literacy and expand ICT use across five senior high schools in the district—Boso SHTS, Apeguso SHS, Akwamuman SHS, Adjena SHS, and Anum SHS.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Hayford Mensah Ayerakwa, Principal Investigator of the LIATPD Project, said the programme seeks to improve teachers’ digital competence and internet connectivity in schools through the provision of computers, high-speed routers, and signal boosters.  “ICT skills are vital in preparing students for the 21st century,” he noted. “We aim to equip both teachers and learners with the competencies needed to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, and innovate while maintaining a strong cultural identity.”

Dr. Gideon Anapey, a resource person, led a session on ICT integration, demonstrating how digital tools can be aligned with the new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum. He emphasised learner-centred pedagogy and the use of web-based tools to make lessons more interactive and engaging. Participants also explored practical applications using platforms such as Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, AI-powered test item generators, and STEM resources like Khan Academy.

Dr. Anapey encouraged teachers to consider the psychological and emotional needs of learners when designing lessons that incorporate digital tools, noting that technology should enhance—not replace—human-centred teaching.

Delivering a session on curriculum implementation, Dr. Emmanuel Adjei-Boateng, a Resource person provided an overview of the philosophy, vision, and goals underpinning the new SHS curriculum. He stressed that understanding the broader educational objectives is key to translating policy into effective classroom practice.

In another session, Prof. Kwaku Darko Amponsah guided teachers through the process of developing detailed lesson plans. He highlighted strategies for embedding 21st-century core competencies, gender equity and social inclusion, as well as socio-emotional learning in lesson delivery.

The Headmaster of Boso SHTS, Mr. Prince Henry, and the Headmistress of Apeguso SHS, Mrs. Victoria Asabea Badoo, commended the LECERP team for the initiative, describing it as timely and relevant for teacher professional development. “This training is invaluable,” Mrs. Badoo said. “It empowers teachers to transfer digital knowledge to their students, improving both teaching and learning outcomes.”

 

The sessions concluded with the election of Internet Change Champions (ICCs) in each participating school. These champions will spearhead ICT integration efforts and support their colleagues in effectively applying digital tools in the classroom.

LECERP is expected to extend similar training later this year to Akwamuman SHS, Adjena SHS and Anum SHS, reaffirming its commitment to advancing ICT-driven education in Ghana.
