The School of Education and Leadership (SEL) of the University of Ghana has launched its 2026 Students’ Advisory Week, providing students with an opportunity to seek academic guidance, address programme-related challenges and make informed decisions about their university education.
A cross-section of participants
Held under the theme, “Transformative Student Experience”, the week-long initiative forms part of the School’s efforts to strengthen academic support, improve student and graduation outcomes and promote academic excellence. It brought together faculty members, administrative staff, student leaders and students from the Departments of Teacher Education, Educational Studies and Leadership and Physical Education and Sport Studies.
The initiative provided students with the opportunity to interact directly with lecturers who teach their respective programmes as well as College Academic Officers, Heads of Departments and Examinations Officers. Through these engagements, students were able to seek clarification on course registration, examinations, academic planning and other challenges affecting their studies.

Speaking at the launch, the Dean of SEL, Professor James Sefe Dzisah, urged students to make full use of the advisory week by engaging faculty and administrative staff on issues affecting their academic progress. “The School is committed to ensuring that students’ experiences on campus were truly transformative and this extends beyond the attainment of academic qualifications, he remarked.

Professor Dzisah encouraged students to cultivate discipline, integrity and leadership, noting that these qualities were essential to their personal and professional development. He also urged them to participate actively in seminars, conferences, student organisations and community engagement activities, which he said could broaden their perspectives, complement classroom learning and equip them for leadership roles in society.
He reaffirmed the School’s commitment to nurturing ethical and transformational leaders capable of responding effectively to contemporary global challenges and contributing meaningfully to society.

The Head of the Department of Educational Studies and Leadership, Professor Usman Kojo Abonyi, also highlighted the School’s postgraduate programmes and encouraged students to consider advanced studies as part of their long-term academic and professional development.

A major feature of the programme was an interactive question-and-answer session involving College Academic Officers, Heads of Departments and Examinations Officers. The session provided students with the opportunity to raise specific concerns about their programmes and receive direct guidance on course registration, examinations and other academic matters.

The engagement highlighted the School’s student-centred approach to academic support and its emphasis on direct communication as an important part of creating a positive and transformative university experience. The 2026 Students’ Advisory Week forms part of SEL’s broader commitment to advancing the University of Ghana’s Strategic Priority One, which focuses on providing a transformative student experience. Through the initiative, the School seeks to empower students to make informed academic choices, overcome challenges and maximise the opportunities available to them throughout their university education.
