UG Takoradi City Campus Empowers SHS Students Through Tech For All Campus Tour

More than 600 Senior High School students from across the Western Region converged on the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC) for the Tech for All Campus Tour, a two-day initiative aimed at equipping young people with practical skills in emerging technologies and digital innovation.

The programme, organised by UGTCC in collaboration with Tech Hub Africa and its partners, formed part of the Campus' commitment to promoting digital literacy, innovation, entrepreneurship and technology education among young people. It also reinforced the University's broader agenda of community engagement and youth development through experiential learning opportunities.

A total of 617 students participated in the programme. Students from Bompeh Senior High School and St. John's School attended on the first day, while participants from St. John's School, Ahantaman Girls' Senior High School and Adiembra Senior High School joined activities on the second day.

Opening the event, the Acting Principal of UGTCC, Prof. Yaw Owusu-Agyeman, urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity to explore the rapidly evolving digital landscape. "The opportunities within the digital space are limitless. Do not restrict yourselves in terms of what you can achieve. Take advantage of this platform to learn, innovate and discover new possibilities," he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Tech Hub Africa, Mrs. Doreen Awuku-Agyeman, echoed this message during an interactive session on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Engaging students in discussions on their expectations of the programme and their perceptions of AI, she highlighted the increasing relevance of emerging technologies in education, business and everyday life.  She emphasised the need to equip young people with the digital competencies required to thrive in the future world of work and to assume leadership roles in an increasingly technology-driven society.

The programme received support from several partner organisations, including Gumption Excell, Gevans, Ofie Agro, Ficus Korea and Ghana Feed, whose contributions helped enhance the learning experience for participants.

As part of the event, the Campus Administrator, Ms. Bernardine M. A. Agyeman, introduced students to the academic programmes offered at UGTCC and encouraged them to consider the Campus for their tertiary education. She also informed participants that admissions for the upcoming academic year were open and encouraged interested students to apply through the University's admission portal.

Throughout the two-day programme, students participated in practical demonstrations, interactive workshops and hands-on learning sessions in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Scratch programming and Metaverse. The activities provided opportunities for participants to engage directly with technology experts, experiment with digital tools and explore innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

A major highlight of the programme was the Hackathon competition, during which students worked in teams to apply the knowledge acquired during the training to develop creative and impactful solutions. The competition showcased participants' innovation, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

At the end of the first day's Hackathon, the winning team received a cash prize of GHS1,000. On the second day, the winning team was awarded GHS600, while the runners-up received GHS500.  Projects were assessed by a panel comprising Mr. Jeremiah Ekow Sarpong and Mr. George Arthur-Kaye of iDevice Care, Takoradi, and Miss Farida Baberin-Yor Beacher of Amalitech Ghana. The judges commended participants for their creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and innovative approach to problem-solving.

Many students described the experience as both educational and inspiring, noting that it was their first practical exposure to technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and the Metaverse. Several participants expressed the hope that the Tech for All Campus Tour would become an annual event to enable more young people to benefit from similar opportunities.

The successful organisation of the programme underscores the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus' commitment to fostering innovation, promoting digital inclusion and preparing the next generation of leaders with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
