College of Education Celebrates DSRA 2026 with Week-Long Activities and Launch of UGCoE Connect

 

The College of Education, University of Ghana, has successfully celebrated the 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) with a week-long programme of academic, research and community engagement activities, culminating in the launch of its maiden magazine, UGCoE Connect. The celebration reaffirmed the College's commitment to advancing research, innovation, indigenous knowledge and strategic partnerships as catalysts for inclusive and sustainable development.

Held under the theme, "Leveraging Innovation, Indigenous Knowledge and Partnerships for Inclusive and Sustainable Development," the celebration formed part of the University of Ghana's annual observance of the DSRA. It brought together faculty, staff and students for a series of activities that showcased the College's research achievements, promoted knowledge exchange and highlighted its contributions to national and global development.

Speaking at the launch, the Provost of the College of Education, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, reaffirmed the College's resolve to harness research, innovation and indigenous knowledge to address societal challenges and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development. He stressed the importance of strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and building partnerships that enhance the College's impact within Ghana and beyond.

Professor Codjoe also commended the seven-member DSRA Planning and Implementation Committee, chaired by Dr. Yvette Ussher, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Adult Education and Human Resource Studies, for its dedication and leadership in coordinating the celebration. He noted that the committee had developed a comprehensive framework that enabled the College's constituent schools and departments to showcase their research, innovations and scholarly contributions.

Providing an overview of the celebration, Dr. Ussher explained that the programme was carefully designed to reflect the College's diverse academic strengths while aligning with the University's broader DSRA objectives. She noted that the week-long activities included a health and fitness walk, a traditional games competition, research seminars, scholarly exhibitions, poster presentations, innovation and technology sessions, educational podcasts and a College exhibition.

A key feature of the celebration was a virtual panel discussion on the theme, "Readiness to Accept AI in Ghana's Educational System: Where Should We Start?" According to Dr. Ussher, the discussion will create an opportunity for academics, researchers and education practitioners to critically examine the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating artificial intelligence into Ghana's education system.  She further entreated constituent schools and departments to actively participate in the celebration through activities aligned with the DSRA theme and sub-themes.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the official launch of the inaugural edition of UGCoE Connect, the College's new biannual magazine.  Introducing the publication, the College Registrar, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, described UGCoE Connect as a strategic communication platform established to document and showcase the College's achievements in teaching and learning, research, community engagement and institutional development.

He explained that the magazine is structured around the five strategic priorities of the University of Ghana Strategic Plan and is intended to strengthen the College's identity while enhancing its visibility and reputation within the University community and beyond.

Bringing the celebration to a close, Professor Codjoe described the successful observance of DSRA 2026 and the launch of UGCoE Connect as important milestones in the College's pursuit of academic excellence. He reaffirmed the College's growing role in promoting research excellence, innovation and knowledge dissemination while reaffirming its commitment to advancing higher education and national development.
