University of Ghana Explores Research Collaborations with York University

Officials from the University of Ghana (UG), led by the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, recently engaged in discussions with a delegation from York University.   The focus of the meeting was to explore potential research collaborations between the two universities aimed at enhancing their relationship.

Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, the College Secretary, expressed his delight at the visit by officials from York University and highlighted the mutual benefits such collaborations could bring. He emphasised that such collaborations align perfectly with the university's vision of becoming a world-class research-intensive university and further highlighted the benefits to various sections of the University.

In brief remarks, Prof. Codjoe provided an overview of the College of Education and its constituent schools, particularly spotlighting the School of Continuing and Distance Education, comprising the; Department of Adult Education and Human Resource Studies, Department of Distance Education and the University of Ghana Learning Centers.  He also noted the recent establishment of two additional city campuses, namely the Takoradi and Kumasi City Campuses.

Additionally, Prof. Codjoe highlighted the six Colleges of Education mentored by the University of Ghana College of Education and discussed one of the College’s flagship programmes, the Annual New Year School and Conference, which provides a platform for national discourse and policymaking. He outlined plans by the College to leverage the learning centers to enhance research opportunities for students.

Prof. Amir Asif, Vice-President of Research and Innovation, York University, presented an overview of his institution, highlighting its multidisciplinary approach. He added that this approach provides a diverse range of programmes and areas of study across various fields, enabling students to explore a wide range of subjects and pursue their interests in different disciplines.

He added that York University was one of the most impactful universities in Canada, highlighting its significant societal contributions. He discussed York University’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by addressing different aspects of sustainability, including environmental stewardship, social equity and economic prosperity.

Furthermore, he discussed the university’s efforts to integrate sustainability principles into its operations, curriculum and research. “By promoting sustainable practices, engaging with the community and strengthening International collaborations, we are strengthening existing collaborations, exploring potential opportunities and facilitating discussions between faculty members” he remarked.

During an open discussion, both teams exchanged ideas on potential research areas that could benefit students in both universities. The areas of potential research collaboration included health, engineering, geography and education.

Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, and Prof. Kwasi Torpey, Dean of the School of Public Health, both expressed excitement about the potential collaboration, citing the invaluable opportunities for students and the advancement of their respective fields.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Codjoe expressed gratitude to the York University delegation for their visit and commitment to engaging in potential research discussions. He looked forward to the outcome of these discussions and was confident of their positive impact on the University, students and the wider community.
