Six Colleges of Education have been affiliated to the University of Ghana for the purpose of running a new Bachelor of Education programme, which forms part of an initiative by government, aimed at improving teaching and learning in the country.
The Colleges are; Accra College of Education, Enchi College of Education, Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education at Amedzofe, Peki College of Education, Gbewaa College of Education at Pusiga and Mount Mary College of Education at Somanya.
Management of the University has met with principals of the six affiliated Colleges of Education, to discuss the roles and responsibilities of each party to the affiliation, and to agree on the content of the memoranda of understanding to be signed between the various parties.
Speaking at the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, called on the principals to ensure financial discipline and adherence to laid down policies and procedures in their Colleges, as they would be held to a very high standard. He stressed that the University of Ghana was excited at the prospect of mentoring the Colleges, and called for a mutually beneficial relationship, with an emphasis on teambuilding and respect.
Discussions centred on finalising the content of the Memoranda of Understanding, assessment, and monitoring and co-ordinating the activities of the Colleges. Also discussed were admissions to the Colleges, quality assurance, the upgrading of faculty in the Colleges, and access by the Colleges to University of Ghana resources.
Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, the Acting Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Michael Tagoe, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Patrick Ayeh-Kumi, Acting Dean of the School of Education and Leadership, Prof. Jonathan Fletcher, and Director of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit, Prof. Daniel Ofori.
Principals at the meeting were Dr. David Ayaaba; Gbewaa College of Education, Dr. Samuel Atintono, Accra College of Education; Mr. Phillip Ntaah, Enchi College of Education; Dr. Dickson Tsey, E.P. College of Education, Rev. Sylvanus Tettey, Peki College of Education and Dr. Cecilia Agbeh, Mount Mary College of Education. Also present were officials from the Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) project, which is working to ensure that teachers are equipped to deliver high-quality, inspirational teaching and learning in Ghanaian schools.
