Maiden UGCOE Provost’s Tournament Unites Affiliated Colleges of Education at University of Ghana

The University of Ghana College of Education (UGCOE), in collaboration with the Education Students Association (EDSA), organised the first-ever UGCOE Provost’s Tournament at the sports field near Mensah Sarbah Hall. The event brought together the UGCOE EDSA and three other affiliated Colleges of Education to compete in various activities, with the football tournament being the highlight.

Professor Samuel N. A. Codjoe, the Provost of the College of Education and Chairman for the ocassion, delivered an address at the event held at the Sarbah Field on Saturday, 20 July 2024. In his address, Professor Codjoe thanked all those who attended the event and welcomed the affiliated colleges to the University of Ghana.

"During my visits to the affiliated Colleges of Education, I received feedback from the faculty, staff and students of the affiliated Colleges that UGCOE should organise activities that would bring them all together", Prof Codjoe remarked. He added that during his annual interaction with the UGCOE community, he challenged the faculty, staff, and students to organise such activities.

The Provost expressed excitement that the students responded to his call and made the tournament possible with the participation of Peki, Amedzofe and Accra Colleges of Education. He admonished all the participating Colleges to see the tournament as an interaction rather than a competition and also encouraged the students to interact and bond with one another. The Provost envisioned the UGCOE Provost's Tournament as a rotating event that would be hosted by different colleges in the future.  Additionally, he acknowledged the absence of three other Colleges: Mount Mary, Enchi and Gbewaa Colleges of Education, noting that Enchi and Gbewaa Colleges were unable to participate due to distance.

Dr. Kwaku Amponsah, Head of the Department of Teacher Education, introduced  the Provost and other senior officials from the University of Ghana who graced the occasion. He also expressed his delight at EDSA's initiative to collaborate with the College of Education in organising such an important event. Dr. Amponsah introduced officials from the affiliated Colleges of Education and student executives from these colleges, with each group chanting their respective slogans.

Ms. Keziah Naa Ashorkor Amarh, the President of EDSA, explained in her remarks that EDSA saw the UGCOE Provost’s Tournament as an opportunity to interact with other Colleges of Education and to learn from each other. She emphasised that this event also presents an opportunity to mingle, make new friends, and have fun. On behalf of the EDSA executives, Ms. Amarh welcomed and acknowledged all the affiliated Colleges present.

The tournament commenced with an official opening by the Provost, featuring the exciting first match between Amedzofe and Peki Colleges of Education. At the end of the tournament, Peki College emerged as the winner, with Accra College of Education securing second place. Time constraints led to the cancellation of the final game for the third place.

The Provost, together with the Dean of the School of Education and Leadership and other senior officials from the College who were present at the tournament, presented the winning trophy to the team from Peki College of Education and extended their congratulations to both competing teams.

After the tournament, the EDSA executives honoured the Provost by presenting him with a citation in recognition of his outstanding and dynamic leadership.

In his closing remarks, the Provost expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the EDSA executives for bestowing him with the honour. Additionally, the Provost extended gratitude to all the affiliated colleges for their outstanding presence and active participation, which significantly contributed to the resounding success of the maiden UGCOE Provost’s Tournament.

Mr. Seidu Rashid, a final year student at the College of Education and former Speaker of the University of Ghana Parliament House under the SRC, moderated the ceremony.
